In Human Design, every person belongs to one of five energy types. Your type isn’t a personality label. It’s a description of your energy mechanism: how your energy naturally operates, how it moves into the world, and what happens when you push it against its own design.
The five types: Generator (~37% of people), Manifesting Generator (~34%), Projector (~20%), Manifestor (~9%) and Reflector (~1%). Each has its own strategy: the way it enters action without resistance. In this article you’ll get to know all five and find some orientation for where you might fit.

GENERATOR: THE ENERGY THAT RESPONDS
Generators are the energetic backbone of the world. Their sacral centre produces sustainable, self-renewing life force, but that energy has a specific mechanism: it doesn’t work on command, it works on response.
The Generator’s strategy is to wait to respond. That doesn’t mean passivity. It means a Generator works best when life brings something (a question, an opportunity, a situation) and their body answers: yes or no. That sacral response is physical, not mental. You feel it in your gut before your head even starts thinking.
How to recognise a Generator:
- they have energy for work they enjoy, and none for work they don’t,
- when they force things and initiate alone, they hit a wall,
- when they respond to what comes, everything flows,
- their measure is simple: satisfaction or frustration.
Frustration in a Generator isn’t a flaw. It’s information: somewhere you’re doing something your body never said yes to.
MANIFESTING GENERATOR: SPEED WITH RESPONSE
The Manifesting Generator (MG) is a subtype of the Generator with an added capacity: they can convert energy into action fast. MGs are quick, multitasking, non-linear. They start five things at once and drop three, and that’s exactly their design, not a flaw.
Their strategy has two steps: wait to respond (like a Generator), then inform (like a Manifestor): tell the people your action affects before you jump in. Skipping that second step is why MGs often knock things over around them and can’t understand why everyone’s upset.
An MG in flow is the fastest-moving being in Human Design. An MG in resistance swings between a Generator’s frustration and a Manifestor’s anger. The difference isn’t speed, it’s whether the starting point was a response or a push.
PROJECTOR: LEADING THROUGH RECOGNITION
Projectors don’t have a continuous energy source of their own. Their gift lies elsewhere: they see systems and people more deeply than anyone else. They’re natural guides of energy, not its producers.
The Projector’s strategy is to wait for the invitation, for the big things: a career role, a relationship, where to live. An invitation means the Projector has been recognised. Advice that wasn’t invited falls on deaf ears, no matter how good it is. Invited advice can change a team, a family, an organisation.
A Projector who works like a Generator, eight hours a day, every day, burns out. Their path isn’t more work, it’s deeper work: fewer hours, more penetrating insight, rest without guilt. MANIFESTOR: THE POWER OF INITIATION
Manifestors are the only type that can initiate from within themselves, without waiting for a response or an invitation. Their aura is closed and repelling; built to clear its own path. Historically they were rulers and pioneers. Today they’re the people who start things that others carry forward.
Their strategy is to inform: before they act, they tell the people the action will affect. Not to ask permission (a Manifestor doesn’t need it), but because informing removes the resistance that otherwise builds up around their unannounced moves.
Manifestors are often misunderstood: as children they’re usually punished for their independence, and as adults they learn to hide their power. Anger is their sign of resistance; peace is the sign that they’re initiating from themselves again.
REFLECTOR: THE COMMUNITY’S MIRROR
Reflectors are the rarest type, just one percent of people. They have no defined centres at all; the whole chart is open. They absorb and amplify everything around them. That makes them a living mirror of their environment: in a healthy community they thrive, in an unhealthy one they’re the first to suffer.
Their strategy is the slowest of all: wait one lunar cycle, about 28 days, before any major decision. In that time the Moon travels through every gate in their chart, and the Reflector experiences the decision from every angle. A decision made too quickly isn’t really theirs; it’s a reflection of someone else.
The Reflector’s measure: surprise at life, or disappointment with it. Their most important question isn’t “what should I do”, but “where am I, and with whom”.
WHICH TYPE ARE YOU?
You can’t determine your type with a questionnaire; it’s calculated from your date, time and place of birth. But you can get your bearings from patterns you probably already recognise:
- Do you have energy for things you enjoy, and feel drained by things you don’t? You’re probably a Generator or MG.
- Do you see people and systems in fine detail, but nobody asks for your view? Often drained after an “ordinary” workday? You’re probably a Projector.
- Do you need to start things yourself, and does waiting for anyone else suffocate you? You’re probably a Manifestor.
- Does how you feel change completely depending on the people and places around you? You might be a Reflector.
